I am fairly new to the whole vegan thing and have fallen in love with cooking again because of this new lifestyle. In fact my hubby and kids all pulled together to buy me a food processor for Mother’s day to help me along the way. I would have to say beans of all kinds but especially black and pinto. You can do so many wonderful things with them. I love chick peas too.

  2. says

It would most likely be chickpeas – great for falafel and curries. Also adore mushrooms, too – in most anything. Thank you for this great opportunity! I just discovered you through the “Fat Free Vegan” blog. Just liked your page on FB.

  3. K says

    Hi Dreena!

I have your first book and it had some great recipes, thank you!
Do you use a lot of tofu in your second book?

    • Dreena says

Thanks K! About the soy, no not that much. There are 200+ recipes and of those about 7 or 8 recipes with tofu and another couple with tempeh. I offer soy-free options for some of those as well. You have an allergy, or just not a big tofu fan?

  4. Sandra Smith says

Thanks to a friend, I discovered your awesome FB page! I entered by liking your page and my favorite plant powered food is KALE!! I have 2 heads baking in the oven right now making kale chips for snacking on later tonight! :)

  5. says

I am very new to the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle. I started a website and wrote a cookbook. I am so loving the results I have been receiving from this lifestyle. Always on the hunt for new recipes and ideas. I got your name and site from the 21 day kickstart with Dr. Barnard. I am so tickled with your site and plan to visit often. I have so many itmes I use on a regular basis. right now i am into sprouts. Trying to recreate a sprouted bread…

    • Dreena says

Hi Fran! Well, welcome to my site and also to the wonderful world of eating vegan! (how corny did that sound?, ha) True, though, as there is so much to discover and enjoy. I hope you enjoy tinkering with my recipes, and I hope to bring you plenty of goodies down the road. :) Good luck!

  6. Liz says

Like many of the posters before me, I find it SO hard to just pick one, but if you twist my arm and tell me to yell what comes to mind first, I’d have to say broccoli. OR spinach. Anything green.

  7. billiejean says

My favorite plant powered food is bananas! I know, it’s boring, but when they get really ripe, they are supper delish in oat bran!

  8. Laila says

Oh… certainly avocado!!! And my 20 month old vegan boy shares my deep deep lover for this awesome fruit. Avocado can be eaten with almost anything, but one of our favourite deserts is avocado smoothy. Yum, yum indeed.

  9. Jessica says

One plant-based ingredient that I have started using since becoming vegan is miso! I love its versatility and unique flavor.

  10. Sharen says

Beans are my favorite. They are so versatile. I buy dry beans, cook them up, and store them in 1/2 cup increments in my freezer. I can substitute 3 packs of the frozen ones (thawed) for a can, puree them and put them in a soup to thicken it up, use thawed ones in casseroles, etc.

  11. jennP says

This year, I started loving brussel sprouts…they are delicious!! It’s funny how you grow up not liking something just people that surround you don’t like it! I would have never known brussel sprouts were SO good if I had not tasted them at our office Christmas lunch buffet! MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmm

  12. Kristen Miklinevich says

My favorite plant-powered food is nuts. They are natures delicious treats to us, packed with delicious protein and good fat. I eat either cashews or almonds every day. Not to mention the wonderful products that come out of nuts such as almond milk, almond/peanut/cashew butter. Wonderful!

  13. Kristen says

It’s so hard to pick one! I love everything that has been mentioned (with the exception of cilantro, which tastes like soap to me). I’ll go with BEETS because they are delicious, healthy, beautiful, and I feel they are an under-loved vegetable. :)

  14. Kristy says

Tweet. Thank you for making it easier to enter. I tweeted a few days ago but then couldn’t leave a message without registering.

  15. says

I like all of the above but my favourite is the chick pea! I like you on FB Dreena. I really really do! And I am so excited to get LTEV as soon as it is released again!!!

  16. Sara S. says

I am into quinoa, that my girls also love and I find myself adding black beans to everything. But my newest thing is Hemp Seeds, I just discovered this recently and I am trying to use in more meals and treats.

  17. Fiona says

Since becoming vegan a year ago, I’ve re-discovered foods I ate for a short time when my family went macrobiotic to support my father who had lung cancer. Sadly, his cancer was aggressive he died within a short period of time. But for six months I ate foods I’d never had – seaweed, millet, seitan, tofu, tempeh, miso…and others. Those flavours are now so much more – they carry a memory, a sad one maybe, but as I was young when my father died, any memory I have of him is precious. so, these are my power foods (with the exception of tempeh which I still can’t develop a taste for).

  18. Gabriela says

I’m a big fan! My favourite ingredient these days is shelled hemp seeds, which I discovered thanks to your amazing spicoli burgers. They’re a a constant in our weekly meals!

  19. Kimberly Louis-Jean says

Coconut is probably my favorite thing ever. I add it to soaked oats with walnuts, banana, flax seed and almond/coconut milk blend. Delicious!

  20. says

My favourite plant powered food is brown rice because you can do almost anything with it. From Asian and Indian meals, to breakfast cereal, to burgers and burritos. It’s the ingredient I use more than any other. I can’t get enough brown rice! :)

  21. says

I’ve already ‘liked’ your FB page ‘ages’ ago ๐Ÿ˜€ and follow you on Twitter for a while now as well. I will tweet about your great give-away right now!
Oh and my favorite vegan super food would be chickpeas and/or lentils!!!

  22. cdub says

I have lots of favorites but right now I’m training for a half ironman and so it’s yams! Yam fries (baked with coconut oil of course) almost every day… but it changes depending on what my body needs (it was cauliflower a few weeks ago and artichokes after that). Thanks for the new book Dreena, it’s amazing! I would love to win this to pass it on to my girlfriend who is expecting her second baby. She is trying to cut out all the “processed crap” as she puts it.

  23. MindyBean says

How can I pick just one? I guess I’ll go with spinach since I have it in my smoothies every morning & my salads every night. Thank you for your wonderful site!

  24. smartlabelprint says

My favorite vegan food is bell peppers. Good cooked or raw!

    (I don’t have fb).

I just purchased your new book. If I’m selected will you please send me a copy of one of your older books?

  25. @AustinRideout says

Greetings! Being vegan, myself, I have grown to love the sea. Seaweed, Chlorella, Spirulina, Nori, Bladderwrack, etc. I love making my own sushi with brown rice and farmers market cucumbers. :)

  26. Aireater LidiaLF says

Right now I am in love with Buckwheat Groats and Irish Moss. Both fantastic together in a raw bread.

  27. frecklepuss says

CHICKPEAS!!! Love em! and now that I have mastered making them from a bag rather than opening a can I make them in advance. I then freeze them in ziplock bags so they are ready when I need them to add to a recipe or defrost and eat as they are!

  28. vappole says

Wow, there are so many! I love fresh herbs, such as parsley, cilantro, basil.. they add so much taste and nutrients. Another is avocado.. I like avocado with almost anything! And pomegranades.. I’d probably put them on the top of my list!

  29. hodsonmk says

My current favorites are lentils, kale and chard! I love making soups loaded with these types of awesome plant-powerful foods.

  30. JennWoj says

New to the vegan lifestyle, but I’ve always loved kale and spinach. Quinoa is a new favorite. This cookbook would be a great help to me.

  31. papiyonmov says

  32. honi says

  35. says

My favorite veggie item is Kale… love it in chips, smoothies, juices, etc. My favorite splurge item is Daiya cheese!

  36. says

Almonds! I carry them in my backpack, purse, and keep them in my glove box as “emergency almonds.” This way, I can use them to hold me over until I can get some real food (and prevents me from buying something that wouldn’t really fill me up, anyway.) They also make almond butter, another one of my favorites :)

  37. camsmama says

I love your recipes! I had already ‘Liked FB’…My favorite plant-powered ingredient is spinach. And, I LOVE that my son (6 yrs.) eats it without hesitation…:-)

  38. pearljamfan4life says

Cilantro, avocado, and fresh squeezed lime juice. Loving guacamole right now! So many different ways to spin it :)

  39. irish74 says

Oh my I have so many favorites! But my ultimate plant powered food is quinoa! You can do som many things with it. Salads, stir fry, muffins, burgers etc. it is awesome.

  40. ribbin78 says

So hard to choose a favorite! But I’m kind of obsessed with popcorn topped with nutritional yeast. Best late night snack ever.

  41. Bevie says

Love beans. I can make them into burgers, burritos or puree them as a thickener for a veggie casserole. (I’m a bit lazy and mostly use the ones from a can rather than cooking them from dry though)

  42. says

I stumbled upon your book, eat, drink and be vegan at my local library and I can’t put it down! I would love to have this book to have for my very own. I’m a new vegan as well as previous gastric bypass patient so all the help I can get is appreciated.

    • Dreena says

oh thank you, that’s lovely to hear. I’ll be bringing many posts here to hopefully help you along your new vegan journey as well. If you’re finding it challenging right now, will assure you it gets easier, and yummier!

  43. AnnaG says

There are so many that I love but right now I’m really loving raw cacoa powder. I make chocolate smoothies with spinach, bluberries, a banana, dates, flax, cacao powder and some non-dairy milk. I love it and the kids do too!

    • Dreena says

awww, Vicki, thank you. Our blogging history goes back a long way, doesn’t it? It means a lot that you are still following my work and enjoying my recipes Vicki. xo

      • Vicki says

I’m flattered. By my calculations you & I go back to 2005! What a fun time. Many of your recipes are my standard for how something should taste like your hummus and chocolate cookies. I haven’t blogged in quite a while, but my passion still runs deep. xo

  50. says

My favorite plant powered food is kale. As a former bacon queen I, for one, wasn’t sure going plant powered would work for me and second, thought that giving up bacon would be like prying a toy from a toddlers hands. I was mistaken! I don’t miss meat, especially bacon, at all! My new bacon is kale. I could eat it all day on everything. I always have it on hand, tear little pieces off and add to whatever I’m eating. Well, maybe not ice cream, but who knows I might like that too!

  51. anna says

My favorite plant-powered foods are cruciferous! =) Broccoli, cauliflower, raw, cooked, smoothied, it’s all great.

  52. Heatherdee says

My favorite plant-powered food is kale (I’m actually wearing my Kale shirt today!). I love that I can pack a nutrient dense punch into my recipes by adding kale to as many things as I can for my little family! Thanks for the opportunity for us to share. By reading the other posts, it is inspiring me to use them more!

  53. jackson1250 says

I’ve already “liked” your fb page, follow you on twitter and will re-tweet this post but I also just ordered “Let Them Eat Vegan” and I’m very anxious to receive it. Now that I’ve become a little familiar with your methods, I’m going for the new curries first.

Just to let you know; this will be the last printed book that I’m going to buy. Physical storage space at my house is very limited and I have almost unlimited space available on my computer so from now on it’s e-books for me.

    • Dreena says

Thomas, I feel flattered that my book is to be your ‘last’ printed order. I like that tangible feel of cookbooks, but I do think the future will all be ebooks, having a monitor in your kitchen to view everything, etc. Thanks for your support – through social media and beyond. Truly hope you love LTEV.

  54. shaver09 says

My favorite plant-powered food of all time is chickpeas, but lately I’ve rediscovered the joy of oatmeal for breakfast, cooked on the stove with pecans and dried cranberries.

  55. Suzanne says

      • bellekitty says

Tempeh! I am new to being a vegan and was shown this wonderful food. Burritos, salads, and just plain. I’m sure there is so much more I can do with it too ๐Ÿ˜€
